More StumbleUpon for Unitarian Universalists
Category: Uncategorized
Shortly following the post on the four reasons UU’s should use StumbleUpon, Looking for Faith had the honor of being Stumbled by two folks (thanks John Pageless and Pimodal!). As a result of having two pages Stumbled, each once, Looking for Faith had 190 visits from StumbleUpon users over three days. And when I’ve Stumbled Looking for Faith pages myself, I’ve seen similar results.
Given that it only takes a few moments to click the “thumbs up” button and write a sentence of review, StumbleUpon is an incredibly efficient way to draw readers to Unitarian Universalist blog posts.
I’d like to make a list of Unitarian Universalist StumbleUpon users and share it on Looking for Faith. If you are new or longtime StumbleUpon user and are UU (or interested in Unitarian Universalism), please e-mail me (ShelbyJMeyerhoff@gmail.com). So far, I have a list of four total, including John Pageless, Suzanne Reed, Ms. Theologian, and me.

I joined last week after Pageless joined. I don’t know much about it and haven’t monkey’d with it as much as I’d like, though.

I joined. I’m not sure I totally understand it yet, but I think I got the basic jist.

I’m not a Stumble user, Digg-er or use any of the other sites similar to those but I did find some code from the wordpress forums (i LOVE wordpress!) that i can place at the end of my posts that helps those users of those sites mark my post in their page.
check it out… cool, huh.

Hi Julian,
Thanks for mentioning this option for Wordpress users.
There is also a Wordpress plugin (or even more than one Wordpress plugin) that allows you to automatically display social media buttons at the end of each post.
I’ve been a little hesitant to use it because I’m afraid it will scare away non-tech-savvy readers who may not know what the buttons mean, but on the other hand it is a good way to remind readers who do use social media to promote your blog. Will you let me know if you have success with it so I can tell other readers?

Hi, Shelby, I just joined StumbleUpon but haven’t figured out what I need to do next. I love Stumbling on the interesting pages I get, but I don’t know how to get mine out there. Maybe that’s what you’re doing. Do you have advice?

Hi Ms. Kitty,
Yes! I’ll be posting on Tuesday with some step-by-step advice for getting started on StumbleUpon, with a focus on using it to promote Unitarian Universalist blogs. I will explain some of the technical details too.
For now, the best thing you can do to get started is just click the “I like it!” button on the toolbar when you are on a site you like.

Sure I’ll let you know how it goes. I’ve had a couple of readers say they’ve shown me some Stumble love and given me a vote for a post.
Thanks for the tip on the plug-ins… posting the code at the end of each post is REALLY tedious. I’ll look for it.
I didn’t know you were a Wordpress user. I thought maybe this was TypePad… i don’t see the WP smiley face. I’ve been thinking about going with WP.org There are some really cool themes out there

[…] UU blogger Julian helpfully recommends pasting some code at the end of posts that includes the buttons for StumbleUpon and other social media. There are also Wordpress plugins that encourage readers to promote your posts on social media. I’ve hesitated to use one on Looking for Faith out of concern that the buttons will confuse readers unfamiliar with social media, but perhaps this is Luddite of me. […]
