About a Boy
Category: Unitarian Universalism - General
I have a stockpile at home of about 10 rainy day movies, one of which is About a Boy. Based on Nick Hornby’s novel, it tells the story of a hip thirtysomething man dedicated to having fun and eschewing meaningful relationships, and the nerdy young boy who decides to seek him out as a friend. As their relationship grows in fits and starts, both “boys” learn to connect not only with one another, but with a wide network of friends and family. It must sound treacly if you’ve never seen the movie, but it’s counterbalanced with wry wit that makes it funny. A few clips:
Bonus question: Which of the Unitarian Universalist seven principles does the movie relate to?
Update 3/19
We have some winners! Tony Lorenzen and Ms. Theologian correctly guessed which principle About a Boy relates to! It’s the seventh principle “Respect for the interdependent web of all existence of which we are a part.” And UUMomma is also an About a Boy fan!

I just love Nick Hornby.
Top Five things about Nick Hornby…. (just kidding).
Do we have a dead duck principle?
What an interdependent web we all weave, eh? I love how this story shows us how we are all wrapped up in each other’s lives, whether we want to be or not, so we’d better get used to the idea.
Peace,
Tony

Yeah, I vote for the interdependence one. :) I liked that movie a lot.

Thanks for commenting friends!
“Do we have a dead duck principle?” LOL. I think intentionally lobbing a hard loaf of bread at a duck’s head probably goes against one of the seven.

I just stumbled upon the end of this the other day. The part where the boy starts to go sing “Killing me Softly.” I cried and cried and cried.

Hi uuMomma,
Yeah, that’s a great scene. I like the very end too, where they are celebrating Christmas together.
