Table Graces for Unitarian Universalists

In response to yesterday’s post on saying grace, Laurie asked for some Unitarian Universalist words for saying grace.
Here are a few suggestions of table graces by and for UU’s:

The WorshipWeb has an awesome grace by Gary Kowalski, and a prayer by Amarette Callaway that would be quite fitting before a meal.

The Unitarian Universalist Association’s FAQ for Newcomers offers several graces from the Handbook of Religious Services.

I also liked the words Joel Monka suggested in the yesterday’s comments:

“For what we are about to receive, may The Divine make us truly thankful.”

Update: In today’s comments, there are two more grace suggestions, from Lizard Eater and Jacqueline (thanks for sharing — we’re getting a good collection together here).

At our family table we say:

    It is good
    It is good to be
It is good to be together

It fits us perfectly. You can add to it “it is good to be together as a family, sharing a meal, celebrating your birthday…” Sometimes it can be silly… “… it is good to be together wearing our underpants, wiggling our toes…” whatever strikes the mood!

For those with small children, to the tune of Frere Jacques …

We are thankful (we are thankful)
For this food (for this food)
    And our many blessings (…)
    Amen

Jacqueline, “… it is good to be together wearing our underpants, wiggling our toes…” How cute!

Lizard Eater, This is a little bit of a tangent, but your comment reminded me… Did you know that tune is sung around the world? I was at a wedding with people from several different parts of the world recently and that was the one song we all knew in our own languages.

A little over a week ago, I also did an article regarding prayer and mention saying grace in particular. In that article, I mention the idea of just having a short moment of silence… Check it out, if you’re so inclined.

    John,

First off, welcome to the UU blogosphere!

Thanks for letting me know about your post on prayer — could you comment again with a link in the “Website” field to the exact post? I’ve read through your blog entries from the past week or two but for some reason I’m not finding it. Thanks.

Thank you! Your’s is the first official welcoming I’ve received.

Did I say that I posted that article a week ago when I meant a month ago… Um… it all kinda blurs together.

    Dear John,

Thanks for the link! I really enjoyed your post; it’s a great addition to the “Can I Pray for You?” discussion going on right now on the UU blogs.

    From you I receive.
    To you I give.
    Together we share,
    And by this we live.

    Hi James,

That’s a great contribution — thanks! I’ve heard it sung as a hymn also.
