Thanks to Rev. Matt Tittle at Keep the Faith, for pointing out the recent Miami Herald article about Unitarian Universalist minister Naomi King, the daughter of author Stephen King.

This article, titled “Scare-master’s daughter soothes souls” describes the Naomi King’s upbringing, her discernment of her call to ministry, and her settlement at River of Grass Unitarian Universalist Congregation in Plantation, Florida.

One thread in the article was the connection between storytelling and ministry, a topic that I’ve explored on Looking for Faith. Rev. King draws a connection between her father’s calling as an author, and her own:

”We’re both storytellers,” King said from her new office, a large space packed ceiling-to-floor with books. “Everyone in my family tells stories. They use the written word. I tell stories through sermons.”

…King says her family wasn’t too surprised by her new vocation.

”Telling stories is kind of like the family business,” she said, laughing.

That makes a lot of sense (the ministry-storytelling connection).

Hey Ms. T., Thanks for commenting. One reason stories are a great tool in ministry is because they invite people to bridge the gap between theological concepts and lived experience.
