What is faith?
For me, faith is grounded in a sense of safety and peace. But faith is more than that. When I have faith, I have the sense that God is present. And faith is forward-looking. Faith is an experience of the sacred that gives one hope.
The Unitarian Universalist Association has recently used the phrase “lifespan faith development” to describe religious classes for children and adults. This phrase, “lifespan faith development,” captures the dynamic nature of faith.
For most people, faith changes shape over the years. It is not on/off switch. We don’t necessarily get faith once and then keep it forever. Thankfully, the reverse is also true. If our faith dims, or even if we have never had faith, that doesn’t mean we can’t develop a powerful sense of faith now.
I have created Looking for Faith because I want to continue developing my faith, and to help you continue developing yours.
Contemporary Unitarian Universalist leaders understand faith in a variety of ways. This week we will be exploring some of their approaches to faith. Considering these approaches may help each of us better understand our own definition of faith, and how we grow our faith.
