Today is a day of remembrance, reflection and mourning. I have found myself in a somber mood, reflecting on the past six years, on how 9/11 and the events since have impacted our world, and impacted me.
Several Unitarian Universalists have offered prayers and meditations for today. They can be read at:
Peace be with you.

Even though it makes me cry, I watch a little bit of the footage on TV, and remember where I was, etc; My teen sons don’t like to see me cry, so I had a talk with them about remembering that day-not being maudlin or morbid; but that it was important for them to remember-not to be sad, but to honor those lost, and also to learn from it; We talked about how they are the next generation to run this country, and they need to not forget to help shape the future in a hopefully more positive way.

Dawn,
What a good message to share with your sons.
I was reading yesterday Beloit College’s Mindset List. They’ve published it each of the last 10 years to describe the formative experiences of that year’s freshman class. A lot of the focus is one which historical events will have meaning to those students, and which ones will not.
But as I was reading, I thought that perhaps they underestimate the transmission of historical knowledge from parents to children. Just because I didn’t live through an event doesn’t mean I can’t sense its importance. My family loves history, and older relatives often talked to me as I grew up about the events they had lived through and the impact of those events on our current world. That made me more aware of why history matters, and what I should do to help shape our country now.
You are doing a great service to your sons, by encouraging them to remember history, learn from it, and see themselves as responsible participants in our country’s future.
